Adventures in Dressing Rooms - Old Navy

This week I popped into Old Navy to return a blazer. Isn't it funny how returning one $40 item can some how turn into buying $170 worth of stuff? Must be magic.

I tried this sweater and these pants on the "you never know til you try" principal. While the sweater was okay but just not my style, the pants made me look pretty dumpy. It's hard to tell from the picture, but they are acutally a pretty dark green color. I think they might work on someone with narrow hips and some killer high heels.

Helloooooo cute shorts ! I snagged these babies in both the Taupe and the Black for $4.97 each!!!!! Amazing!

This sheer blouse has a pretty dusty pink hue (the pictures aren't doing it justice) and a lovely keyhole with a ribbon tie. The only down side was that the fabric was so light weight that is was super static-y. Other than that though, I really like this top.

The warm floral print of this tank is a great print to transition from summer to fall. I really liked the ribbon tie on the back.

I super duper love this top!! I mean, duh, it's got a neck tie. I'm such a sucker. (this colorway is apparantly not available on the website.)

I'm a die hard skinny jean fan, so when I saw this skinny jean (not on the website) with some rather different detailing I got pretty excited. Turns out these don't fit me for crap though. They fit my butt okay, but were very strangely loose in the lady bits area. Plus I think that the large pockets accentuate the hips in a negative way.

oh hey. i bought this in green too.
One thing of note though, because the front and the back of this blouse both slant in at the neckline, you'll need a halter or strapless bra for this blouse.

Let's just take a moment shall we? I . am . dying . for . this ... This sweater is so great! (not on the website) The black panels on the sides are so chic and slimming to boot! Being an extra tall lady, I'm also freaking over the 3/4 length sleeves. Divine! And heeellllloooooooo booty! This ultra skinny jean is GREAT! They fit comfortably and are a killer bright red (red not avilable on the website). Awesomesauce.

Just in and of itself, this leopard print blouse is pretty uninteresting, but with a little styling it's not too shabby.

Bought this blouse in both the white and the tan. I am not a fan of elastic waist shirts, but with the deep V and tie neck it really draws your eye up, so the bothersome elastic is not so noticable.

Sad for me this sweater was too small for my shoulders, but I wish it wasn't! I do oh so love a chunky sweater, in fact I practically live in them year round. In the picture on the left, I have both snaps snapped, and on the right, just the lower snap snapped.

I thought the coat on the right would be my favorite, but once I slipped on The white on the left I quickly changed my mind. It's such a nice ladylike classic coat.

I tried the same coat (as the white) in red and in the store, I was definitely leaning toward the white. Once I got home however and was looking at these pictures, I realized I really do love this nice bright tomato red. Besides, I'm a rather colorful chica, I should just go for the gusto, right?

Cold weather is gonna be here before we know it! It's never too early to stock up on fun colorful scarves. I'm totally prepared to bundle up.

p.s. I've never run into having so many things not available on the website before! So sorry!

Gifts for Fashionable Men

Yes, I think these are great gifts for fashionable men. But this post could be more aptly titled: Super Amazing Gift for Katie Petix of Today I Want...
Either way... Gift for Fashionable Men, Gift for me, tomaaato, tomoooto.

Every once in a while I'll be on Etsy mindlessly clicking through pages and pages of goods and all of the sudden... The Holy Grail.

Okay, maybe not just like finding the Holy Grail (can you imagine? No really, close your eyes, clear your head, now picture me in an amazing 1940's dessert safari outfit, riding a camel, scratch that, riding a horse, anthropological treasure in my satchel, accomplished look on my face, Harrison Ford on a horse next to me...) but finding Stash - Modern Function, Vintage Fashion was pretty awesome none the less.

Vintage Party Dress

I think my obsession with vintage party dresses started when I was 14. It was Homecoming, my freshman year. Two other girls had on the same dress as me. Mortifying. So the next year, my Mom and I headed to a consignment shop to get my dress.

Now, like a billion years later, I'm still obsessed. Every time I see a vintage party dress I want it. Even if I have no where to wear it. (Hoarder? Maybe....)

Speaking of vintage dresses and parties, have you VOTED for what I should wear this Friday? the 40's and 50's are neck and neck! So yeah, you should vote. Or vote again. And have your friends vote.

IFBcon shoe obsessed

Last Wednesday I attended The Independent Fashion Bloggers Conference ( IFBcon ) in NYC. Not only did I come back to DC with a notebook full of scribbled down bits of advice, I also came back with a camera full of pictures of peoples feet. What a freak.

It's funny ya know? You go to a gathering of peers, you imagine you'd be chatting all day. Turns out I just ran around the room on my time off obsessing over peoples shoes. Go fig.

Keiko Lynn's on the go wearing Seychelles Hawk Wedges (you can see her whole outfit HERE). The oh so coveted Jessica Simpson Collection "Dany" was there (I've got these babies in tan and black!) And one of the beyond fabulous ladies of Idiosyncratic Fashionistas was wearing some super rad two tone creepers. I was so stoked to have a quick chat about loving creepers! She got hers at Trash and Vaudeville in NYC one of my most favorite places to go when I visit NYC where Jimmy (I love you Jimmy!!) will try to get you to buy the smallest pants you can squeeeeeze your butt into. And then he'll tell you you still need a smaller size.

For more non-shoe picks you can check out my brand spankin' new Tumblr page HERE
OR
You can see me and some other fab IFBcon ladies and gents HERE and HERE

Happy Friday Everyone!!

Valorina Pleated Dress

I am beyond ready for autumn. All I want right now is burgundy, mustard, and brown. And knee socks. And tights. And big chunky sweaters. And pumpkins. And apple cider. And Halloween paraphernalia. Lots and lots of Halloween paraphernalia. Vampire bats!! I digress...
Back to the point, I am super into autumnal colors right now. This burgundy dress is just lovely for the transition from summer to fall. It's light weight and breezy, but also that rich red hue. Just lovely (yes, it's so lovely I had to say it twice.) !

Vintage Mad Men Style

Mad Men has really done wonders for vintage silhouettes, even spawning an entire Mad Men Collection at Banana Republic. I love ladylike shapes, keep on influencing fashion Mad Men!

Personally, I buy true vintage, very rarely repro, and one of my favorite go to's is Etsy. It's kind of like a vintage mecca. Pages and pages and pages of vintage in every price and every state of condition. Faaaabulous!

I don't know if Mad Men uses actual vintage dresses or if they custom make each dress. If it is the former though, I think this dress would be perfect for Christina Hendricks' character Joan Holloway. Viva Voluptuous Vintage!

Boots from Piperlime

It's just about that time of year again, time to put away those open toe sandals and pull out your boots. Here are my boot picks from one of my most faaaaaaaavorite place to buy shoes, Piperlime! They've got you covered from Ankle Boots to Mid Height to High Shaft. I personally always seem to lean toward the shorter heights, maybe this year I'll be adventurous and try some knee highs!
What about you guys? What boot height is your favorite?

new york, i love you

Hiya lovies! I had intended on a nice informative post about the independent fashion blogger conference i'm attending today in NYC. Unfortunately I opted to not bring my laptop since the hotel has a business center. Said center however makes you swipe a credit card even to get a web browser up. So lovelies, I decided to post from my phone instead. Sadly that means I can't link you to the live feed of the conference. Sorry!! I promise photos and info sometime this weekend. Xoxo!

Karl Lagerfeld at Macy's

Yup, Karl Lagerfeld artist extrodinaire has done a collaboration with Macy's. Curious? Yeah, me too.

Here's my take:

Let's just start off by saying, that is one diiiiirrrrrrty dressing room mirror!
Okay, now that that is out of the way, the clothes...

Dear Karl, I love your style on you, but it looks a little silly on a lady. Love, Me.
The high collar is... let's see... interesting? But not flattering in my humble opinion. I think the neck is one of the loveliest parts of a woman, how sad to hide it all the way to the chin!

I liked this shirt better than the first, but still not a super fan of the high neck. Also, I'm not into adding a horizontal pleat detail across my hips ("hey look how WIDE I am!") Bras may be a problem with this top. Not that you couldn't find a strapless, but I think it would be tough because the pleated detail is actually pretty low. I think a normal strapless would peak up above the sheer part. I wish this had been done as a dress, it would be ultra sweet for cocktails!

It does have a pretty keyhole in the back however! (sorry so buurrrrrly!)

But looooook! If you unbutton the collar and fold it over it totally transforms. Oh hi neck!

Hrrmmm.... This coat... was just... well...
This coat just wasn't for me. It felt like a vintage 80's coat. Too big. Poorly proportioned. (Sorry Karl! I love you still!)

The color of this dress was really strange to me. It was a kind of awkward shade of fleshy pink. It might be really pretty on someone with a darker complexion. Beyond the color it just doesn't fit my proportions well (average bust, tiny waist, big bottom) I think it would look good on someone with a less hourglass shape, but I really hate how baggy the collar is.

I dunno dudes. This has unnecessary beading detail at the neck that looks a little cheap,  and made me feel like I need above the elbow leather gloves and a riding crop. Oh yeah, and that collar again! Meh.

Finally some stuff that is appealing to me. The funny thing is though, this dress and the next looked like they totally didn't belong in this collection. I loved them both. Girlie. PeterPan Collar. Hourglass shaped. Divine!

Dudes! Look how tiny I am! I had a wicked case of food poisoning last week and lost 12 pounds. NO FUN. But look how tiny I am! Ha Ha! Anywhaaaay, This was super sweet. It's almost the same color as the fleshy pink dress a few above, but since it has a crepe texture to it and is floaty, flowy it's not off putting like the other one.

It also had this interesting tulle detail on the neckline. I liked and didn't like the detail all at once. It was pretty and defined the neckline well, but seemed to keep folding under. I wish it was a bit stiffer or had a nude fabric to back it.

All in all, I was kinda bummed out by the Karl collection. I hate to be negative but it felt too inspired by the power suit of the eighties for my taste (and maybe too much by Karl's personal style) and the proportions didn't jive too well with my body type. C'est la vie. Have you tried any of it? If so I'd love to hear what you thought!

And following up for you...
So hey, remember this? Well here is the back:

(ew, look how boney my back is!)
